What does it mean to be a member of a church?
A VITAL PART OF THE BODY
Church membership is not about paying dues and receiving benefits like membership in a country club. To be a member of a church is to be attached and committed to a local body (church) and function as an essential part (like an arm or leg).
MEMBERS ARE MINISTERS
To be a member of a church is to take on responsibility. Members shoulder the responsibility that the whole church has to make disciples. Members take on the responsibility to use their gifts to serve Jesus through His church and to each do their part to build up the body of Christ to maturity (Ephesians 4:11-14).
WHY IS CHURCH MEMBERSHIP IMPORTANT?
Biblical church membership is important because the church represents Jesus to the world. This is a distinction that is made. Church members are to be recognized as inside the church—this is not a casual association, but a meaningful covenant to other believers bound together by the gospel to proclaim Christ to the world. Church membership is important because it binds us together for accountability, obedience to the teachings of Jesus, and living out authentic community (Acts 2:42-47).
